Training and experience
A clinically minded immunologist from my very first steps in the specialty, with in-depth training in the laboratory.

I have been a clinically minded immunologist since my first steps in the specialty. Even so, I have sought in-depth training in the laboratory, which has given me a thorough knowledge of the techniques, their limitations and their possibilities. I head the Immunochemistry laboratory of a major public hospital, accredited under ISO 15189 by ENAC.
On the clinical side, I trained in immunodeficiencies and autoimmunity at some of the best hospitals in Madrid, including Ramón y Cajal, La Paz, Gregorio Marañón and Clínico San Carlos. I have also attended courses of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) in Freiburg, Germany.
Research in antiphospholipid syndrome
I am part of Dr. Antonio Serrano's research group on antiphospholipid syndromes, where I am currently co-principal investigator. We have published highly relevant contributions to the field, adding diagnostic value through the study of new autoantibodies such as anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin, anti-β2GPI immune complexes and IgA antibodies. We are currently working on a line of research that we believe will help clarify the pathogenic mechanisms of the syndrome.
We were also the first in the world to treat this syndrome with a drug targeting plasma cells, achieving a very significant clinical remission.
Reproductive immunology
I have cared for patients with sterility and infertility, recurrent implantation failure and recurrent pregnancy loss. I have worked with large teams of immunologists (Hospital Ruber Internacional, Ruber Juan Bravo and Paseo de la Habana clinics) and of reproductive medicine (HLA Moncloa Hospital and Instituto Bernabeu), providing immunological assessment and intervention for patients from Spain and abroad.
This experience led me to focus my career on this field, in which I wrote my doctoral thesis and to which I devote myself every day, working with gynaecologists from Spain and other countries.
I am passionate about clinical immunology because there is still so much to explore, understand and develop to help patients.
I have helped develop or introduce
- Non-criteria antiphospholipid antibodies
- Anti-intercellular substance antibodies
- Blood NK cell populations
- In-depth KIR genotyping
- HLA-C typing

- Hydroxychloroquine in APS and reproduction
- Therapies for KIR/HLA-C mismatch
